Masala Chai Pear Scones

Well, we all know the weather has been quite terrible lately. What better way to brighten your day, than to make scones and drink coffee. Together the two are warm and flavorful. Today, I really wanted to mix two of my favorite things, Chai and Pears. Because we just unveiled our new pear chips on the market, I decided to use pear chips instead of fresh pears because they bake so much better and add a spark of natural sweetness.

When deciding what ingredients to combine with pears in a scone, I decided to go with Chai because it smells delicious and tastes divine. Chai by itself is just tea, according to the actual definition. It is Masala Chai that includes the aromatic spices as well as the tea. The spices that are included are Cardamon, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Black Peppercorns, Cloves, and Ginger. So those are exactly what I used in this recipe.

This recipe is from Pastry Affair
Chai Pear Scones
Yields 8 scones
2 cups (250 grams) all-purpose flour
1/2 cup (55 grams) granulated sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons (85 grams) butter, cut into small pieces
1 Cup of Crumbled Up Pear Chips
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup (80 ml) heavy cream
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, spices, and salt. Cut in butter with pastry blender or your hands until mixture resembles coarse sand. Stir in pear chunks. Set aside.
In a small bowl, beat together egg, vanilla, and heavy cream. Pour over the scone batter and lightly mix until the dough comes together. The dough will be sticky.
Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface, form a circle, and flatten it until it is about 1-inch thick. Using a sharp knife dipped in flour, cut 8 equal pie wedges (the dough will be slightly unmanageable, but not adding additional flour results in tender scones). Transfer scones to a baking sheet using a flat spatula and sprinkle the tops of the scones with a little granulated sugar. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until lightly browned.

Pear Bacon Brie Panini

One of our most recent company purchases was a professional panini maker and we wanted to give it a try, so we grabbed some of our new Delicious Pear Chips and got started. Because the pear chips are nice and sweet, we decided to add Bacon because it is delicious and combine it with a Brie Cheese. Too give it a bit of spice, we added thyme and scallions and got to work.

Using a panini maker the sandwich gets those beautiful crispy lines that really make it a panini rather than a grilled sandwich. We just used an olive oil spray to give it some smokiness and sizzle. As we prepped the sandwiches, we watched the machine gain heat and our mouths started watering. When we placed it on the panini maker and squashed it down, the cheese started to melt and drip down.

Together the flavors really complemented each other. The bacon added some texture and flavor, while the cheese and pears melted so well together. However, the really important part were the scallions and thyme because they took great flavors and just accented them in a great way!

So try it at home, because we definitely recommend it.

It is always a great sign when there is nothing left over...and there wasn't event a crumb.

Rose Valentines Day Cake

What better way is there to celebrate Valentines Day, than to eat cake! We paired a strawberry cake with a cream cheese frosting, and placed Red Delicious Sliced Apple chips all throughout the cake to make a Rosy Valentines Day Cake! It was super simple, but it is still very pretty and delicious. Marie Antionette said it right when she said:

“Qu'ils mangent de la brioche”—“Let them eat cake.”

Smoked Salmon Appetizer

So here at Sisters Fruit, we wanted to get creative with apple chips and discover how else we could pair them with other foods. We knew that apple chips and goat cheese make a harmonious pair, so we thought why not add something really savory to the mix. So we decided to go with smoked salmon, because there really isn't anything bad about salmon, it is incredibly healthy and tastes divine!

So with the recipe, we were taking a risk because it is definitely a new and fresh idea. However, this was a complete success! The combination of the three ingredients, complemented with the parsley, was an absolute win and we would wholeheartedly recommend serving these little appetizers at any party or get together. It is the perfect blend of sweet and savory! So try out this recipe and let us know what you think!
